A Story of Hope and Kindness: The Journey of Santos

ISP NewsAll

At the International School of Panama (ISP), the power of kindness and community has always been at the heart of our values. This year, our Pre-Kindergarten (PK) community embarked on a touching journey that profoundly impacted us all. Through the Make a Wish organization and utilizing the funds collected at the PK Art Exhibition, we supported five children with serious health conditions. One of them is Santos, a remarkable nine-year-old boy from Chepo, Panama. This story of hope, which we proudly share with our ISP community, is about how kindness can change lives, including those who give and receive it.

Santos’ life story

Santos was born with severe liver issues and at just one and a half months old, he became critically ill. His family lived in a remote area of Darién, where medical care was scarce. A young doctor quickly referred him to a hospital in the city, where it was discovered that one of his kidneys was non-functional, and the other was severely strained. Before turning two years old, Santos was already on dialysis, a lifeline he has depended on for survival while awaiting a kidney transplant. For nine years, his family has kept their phones on 24/7, hoping for the call that could change Santos’ life.

Despite his health challenges, Santos embodies resilience and positivity. He endures daily five-hour dialysis sessions at home while he sleeps, allowing him to enjoy his childhood during the day. Carrying a dialysis bag on his stomach, he has missed out on activities like swimming and playing certain sports. Recently, doctors removed his external valve, and they are now assessing the functionality of his remaining kidney, still hoping for a transplant that could grant him a better quality of life.

A special day for Santos

When the PK community at ISP heard about Santos’ wish—to buy lots of clothes and eat the best burger in the world—we were determined to make it happen. Through a partnership with Make a Wish and the H&M store at Multiplaza, we arranged a special day for Santos. On Saturday, at 11:00 am, Santos was taken to Stevens, where he joyfully picked out clothes and a few toys. The real magic happened at H&M, where the staff greeted him warmly. Santos’ charming personality captivated everyone’s hearts, and his radiant smile touched us deeply.

After the exciting shopping spree, we headed to Friday’s for lunch. Santos’ thoughtfulness was evident as he ensured everyone was comfortable, pulling out chairs and setting the table. He wanted to sit beside us, eager to chat and share his joy. His father, who accompanied him, wore a smile that reflected his grateful heart. Despite the uncertainty and pain, Santos’ family remains grateful for every moment they have with him. His father shared that many of Santos’ peers have not survived, making their journey together even more precious.

The great gift was the one given to us by Santos and his family

This experience taught us invaluable lessons about life and gratitude. The family, despite their economic limitations, exemplifies happiness and appreciation for the support they receive. They do not seek wealth; their greatest wish is for Santos’ health. They remain hopeful and thankful for the kindness extended to them.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the ISP community for their unwavering support. This journey has been a beautiful reminder of what truly matters. We look forward to sharing the stories of the other four children whose wishes will be fulfilled soon. Thank you for being part of this incredible experience, and for demonstrating that kindness truly changes lives.

Together, we continue to make a difference, one act of kindness at a time and many other stories of hope to come.
