Learning to lead: Reflecting, renewing, and strengthening ISP’s vision

AllISP News

One of the most important responsibilities of school leadership is knowing when to step back from the day-to-day demands and reflect deeply on the purpose and direction of the work we do.

This semester, I have the opportunity to participate in a fully funded fellowship at Teachers College, Columbia University, alongside a cohort of independent and international school heads. This experience is designed to provide space for reflection, collaboration, and renewed vision — all in service of leading schools thoughtfully and responsibly.

Leadership as a learning practice

At ISP, our mission is to inspire and challenge every learner to reach their full potential. I strongly believe that this includes school leaders as well.

The fellowship focuses on:

  • Current issues in education
  • Educational philosophy and ethics
  • Reflective practice and leadership decision-making
  • Design thinking and case study work
  • Observations of diverse independent school models

These experiences provide the opportunity to examine not only what we do in schools, but why we do it — and how we can do it better.

Bringing learning back to ISP

This fellowship is not about individual growth in isolation. It is about strengthening ISP as a learning organization.

The insights gained through dialogue with global school leaders, faculty, and graduate students will inform how we continue to support teaching excellence, student learning, and community wellbeing at ISP. Reflection at the leadership level helps ensure that our decisions remain aligned with our values and responsive to the evolving needs of our students and teachers.

Leading with purpose

ISP’s commitment to excellence and innovative spirit require continuous learning at every level of the organization. I am grateful for the opportunity to engage in this work and to bring renewed energy, clarity, and perspective back to our community.

Leadership, like teaching and learning, is never finished — and that is what makes it meaningful.
